The Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC) announced it is the recipient of three awards from the Northeastern Economic Developers Association’s (NEDA) 2008 Literature and Promotion Awards.

The RIEDC received two “Excellent” citations for the agency’s Opportunity: RI direct mail campaign and for the RIEDC website redesign. A third award of “Merit” was granted for the corporation’s marketing collateral.

“NEDA’s recognition of our team’s good work celebrates RIEDC’s thoughtful and creative approach to communicating about Rhode Island with both in and out-of-state audiences,” says Saul Kaplan, RIEDC executive director. “The team has done an excellent job of creating cost efficient, yet highly effective products for our economic development activity.”

In February 2008, the RIEDC launched Opportunity: Rhode Island, a regional attraction campaign aimed at identifying expansion and relocation opportunities initially focused in the financial services, information technology and digital media, and health and life sciences sectors. The campaign, funded in part by the Rhode Island Commodores, uses direct marketing, industry events and peer outreach to generate new business development leads.

Also in early 2008, the RIEDC re-launched its website, riedc.com, following a strategic in-house redesign of the site to make the agency’s business services, data and publications, mission and strategy, and pertinent business development news more accessible to users. The agency’s print marketing collateral, redesigned in 2007, mirrors the clean and accessible design of the website, focusing on information regarding each of the state’s industry sectors as well as RIEDC programs and services.

The judges included a NEDA panel of experts in the fields of economic development and marketing drawn from NEDA’s territory (Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont), and all submissions were rated in terms of: design and layout, clarity of message, production quality, functionality, and overall creativity and impact.

The awards were presented at NEDA’s recent Annual Conference in Buffalo, New York.
